A Unique Sophomore Experience
10th Grade Students
The second set of classes available at CASEE is the CASEE II which includes Forestry, Wildlife, Environmental Science, and Honors English II.
Enrolling in CASEE II classes means immersing yourself in the skills used by foresters, ecologist, wildlife managers and environmental scientist. CASEE II students conduct authentic research in the CASEE forests and work with professional scientists at local nature preserves, Mount St Helens and the Oregon coast.
All new students must complete and submit the New Student Application. Returning students complete a separate form at the end of Freshmen year.

Forestry* – Semester 1
Forestry gives students an introduction to management techniques to develop forest areas for economic, recreational, and ecological purpose. Course includes instruction in forest-related sciences, mapping, sampling techniques, operation of forestry tools, basic statistics, harvesting techniques, production technology, natural resource management, ecological principles, forest wildlife sciences, plant and tree identification, tree morphology and physiology, life cycle and dendrology.
This course also provides an opportunity to earn 5 college credits in Botany for free through the College in the High School (CIHS) program. There is no difference in content or assignments to qualify for these credits. CASEE's CIHS courses are available through partnership with Everett Community College.
Semester course

Wildlife – Semester 2
Wildlife introduces students to the concepts of wildlife management including the laws, organizations, and government that protects our wildlife and wildlands. Course emphasizes principles in wildlife ID of a species (mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish), including some ID of skulls, tracks, scat; anatomy and physiology of wildlife groups; wildlife biology; and methods for conducting wildlife surveys. Includes instruction in natural resource management. Students will become comfortable analyzing and discussing wildlife essays, journals, case studies, and content and themes and policy; outdoor recreation and parks management; and the operation of natural wildlife environments.
Semester course

Environmental Science
Environmental Science investigates earth’s many systems including function, inputs & outputs, cause and effect, reasons for imbalance, and to analyze man’s role in management and conservation. Students will become well versed in the pedagogy of the environmental science and important environmental issues, and be able to analyze these issues in terms of ecological, environmental, and social perspectives. Students will conduct real world research with scientists to gain a better understanding of the ecosystem function and health including sampling techniques, industry level tools, and technology to assess ecological health. Outdoor research, field studies, and field trips are embedded into the curriculum.

Pre-Requisites: Algebra and Biology
CASEE students travel to the Oregon Coast to test their field study skills.
Honors English II
Honors English II students focus on note-taking skills, active reading, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, essay content and organization, thesis writing, and essays of argumentation, narratives, persuasive writing, journal writing, poetry, analytical writing, response writing, research skills using a variety of technology, scientific and classic literature.
CASEE II students earn an Honors designation for this course because many of the English topics relate to concepts within Environmental Science, Forestry, & Wildlife courses which allows for a deeper understanding and application of the English curriculum for sophomore year.
Students prepare multimedia presentations and present research to peers and community members. Students will also engage in discussion including in-class discussions and online discussions with their peers.
